What Being an Apprenticeship Ambassador Means to Me
Becoming an Apprenticeship Ambassador is one of the most meaningful steps I’ve taken on my career journey so far. It’s more than a role - it’s a chance to be part of something bigger.
As someone who came into tech later in life, I know how life-changing a well-supported apprenticeship can be. I’ve experienced it firsthand. But I also know that many people still don’t realise what apprenticeships really are, or who they’re for. This role gives me the opportunity to share real stories, challenge outdated ideas, and advocate for high-quality apprenticeship experiences for all.
🔹 My Route into Apprenticeships
Before I became an apprentice, my path was far from conventional. I’ve worked in retail and hospitality, I’ve been a parent, and I ran a small creative business - where I managed everything from designing and creating products, building and managing a website (which I have now repurposed for this blog!), maintaining multiple e-commerce platforms, managing social media,
Choosing to do an apprenticeship wasn’t a “plan B” for me - it was a conscious, empowered decision to build something new, and to move into a career I truly care about.
I now work as an IT Technician at PGL Travel, and I’m nearing the end of my apprenticeship. It’s been a challenging, rewarding, and transformative experience. Before I started, I didn’t think I would have much responsibility until after I had completed my apprenticeship, but I soon found myself involved with some pretty complex tasks, with access to multiple systems and getting stuck right into the nitty gritty of the IT world. It has been eye opening to see just how much a company relies on IT for its day to day operations.
🔹 Why I Became an Ambassador
I’ve always believed in using my voice. In the past, I’ve stood up for what matters: I’ve advocated for women’s safety and brought national attention to the issue through a complaint that led to ICO research. I’ve also supported a loved one with autism, navigating systems, raising awareness, and challenging assumptions. I am someone who sometimes cannot keep my mouth shut. I have been told I am loud. I plan to keep on being loud, and keep on speaking out.
So when I saw the opportunity to become an Apprenticeship Ambassador, it felt like a natural next step.
I want to:
-
Challenge the stigma around apprenticeships
-
Celebrate diversity among apprentices—including older learners, career changers, and parents
-
Encourage employers to invest in their apprentices with care, structure, and respect
-
And inspire people who might never have considered this route to give it a second look
🔹 Apprenticeships Need Representation
Too often, apprenticeships are marketed only to young school-leavers. But they are so much more. Apprenticeships should be visible as a viable path for everyone - regardless of age, background, or previous career.
When people see apprentices who are older, confident, and coming from different walks of life, it shifts the narrative. I hope my presence as an Ambassador shows people that it’s never too late to learn something new, to change direction, or to grow.
🔹 Paying It Forward
My apprenticeship has helped me gain not just skills, but confidence, purpose, and a clear direction. I’ve been lucky to work with an incredible IT team at PGL Travel where I’ve been supported, challenged, and trusted. Being surrounded by a supportive team, who are rooting for me has made all the difference while navigating this journey.
Now, it’s my turn to give back. Through this role, I’ll be working to support others in finding opportunities, navigating barriers, and realising their potential.
Because everyone deserves a future they can be proud of.
